I want to introduce myself. I'm Mrs. Houghton, and I'm "The Reading Lady." As an educator and reading specialist, I created The Reading Lady to help children learn to read and to impart my love of reading. Reading is an adventure that changes with each new book. It is a journey that you can take over and over again.
I would like to share my background as an educator. I've been a reading specialist for over 14 years, and an educator for 20 years. I have my Masters in Reading from the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. I'm working on a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Reading and Educational Administration at SUNY Albany. I hold certification as an elementary teacher, a reading specialist, a building principal, and a school district administrator.
In addition to belonging to the International Reading Association and the New York State Reading Association, I'm a member of The American Center for Law and Justice, The National Wildlife Federation, The Humane Society, The National Humane Education Society, Easter Seals, and The Heritage Foundation. I have been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who, Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Education.
My favorite hobby: "Reading", of course! Other hobbies include organic gardening and cooking.
The Reading Lady is designed to promote literacy for ages 3-8. In the future, we hope to target children 9-12. The show is also designed to give parents strategies so they can help their children learn to read and become better readers. Literacy is a lifelong pursuit. At the present time, there is an introductory episode plus twenty-nine other episodes with more in progress. The Reading Lady is airing on 101 Public Access television stations in 27 states and is being cablecast into approximately 2.5 million homes.
