Hi everyone! I'm Ed the Gorilla.
I've been with the Reading Lady for twelve years, but it took a long time to find her!
My journey began halfway around the world on the continent of Africa. As a young gorilla, I lived in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. I kept hearing about the United States and decided that I wanted to visit. It was so different from my home in Africa, and it sounded exciting!
When I finally made the trip, I wanted to learn everything I could, especially how to read. Everywhere I traveled in the U.S., I saw people reading books. Everyone seemed fascinated as they turned the pages of these mysterious collections of words.
I spent some time traveling to see the country and discover more about what I might be able to do there. I talked with a lot of great people, but I didn’t find anywhere I could call home. One day, I met a nice family from a place in New York called Schenectady. They said I could stay with them, and so I went to their house, and we got to be very good friends.
Mary was my best friend in the family, and she was the first one who told me about Mrs. Houghton, The Reading Lady. I got very excited because I’d been trying to learn how to read so that I could learn more about the U.S., but I needed help. It’s not easy to teach yourself to read, especially when you’re a gorilla!
Mary said I should go stay with The Reading Lady if I wanted to be a better reader. She told me Mrs. Houghton loved books and knew all about how to help people learn to read, so she should be able to teach me, too.
And guess what? She did! Now I help The Reading Lady with her mission of showing kids the joy of books. We want to share our love of books and reading with everyone, especially children who are just starting out as readers.
I love my job with the Reading Lady and plan to stay here with her to help young people develop a lifelong love of reading!
